Getting involved with St John’s Table Tennis Club

Co-captains, Kaylyn Lu and Pei Jun Quek, explain why they got involved with St John’s Table Tennis Club, and why they think you should too.

Kaylyn: Like a lot of players on the John’s team, I’d hardly played any table tennis prior to university! I would play my (significantly better) cousins and uncles once a year at the family barbecue, but that was the extent of my experience. I ended up joining table tennis largely on a whim; I was drawn to the stall at the Sports & Societies Fair during Freshers’ Week, and once I found out that training was conveniently located in Leech Hall (no trek to MC!), I quickly signed up.

It ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve made at university. Since joining, I’ve made a lot of great friends, and I’ve had the opportunity to co-captain alongside two of them — the legendary Kyrillos, and now (equally amazing) Jun.

Jun: As for me, I had picked up table tennis back in my secondary school days and still play occasionally over the years. Owing to the convenience of practice sessions held in Leech Hall and the small but friendly group of regulars coming together every Saturday, I became more involved in John’s Table Tennis and also made some good friends through the club.

This year I became co-captain with Kaylyn and inherited the table tennis bat of our legendary ex-captain Kyrillos, an Egyptian Coptic Orthodox monk who just graduated with his PhD in Theology!

John’s Table Tennis is a super chill and friendly club that welcomes players with all levels of skills. Our practice sessions are held at Leech Hall every Saturday 4.30-6pm. Bats will be provided so do come around to play and let off some study stress! For those looking for the competitive edge, we also have some matches against other colleges throughout the term.
