There is a great Johnian tradition of culinary excellence and creativity which started in 2020 during the first lockdown with our very own virtual MasterChef, followed afterwards by the success of in-person Masterchef Challenges with a wide spectrum of recipes from all around the world, ranging from the classic but unique simplicity of an Italian pasta al sugo and the authentic taste of a proper North-East Yorkshire pudding, to a spicy, colourful Indian curry!

Building on this amazing set of abilities of our students and staff, we called everybody in on Saturday 11th March for a fundraising event in honour of Durham University’s Global Week, aiming to support the Save the Children Appeal for the Turkish and Syrian populations following the earthquake. Students and staff brought and shared their homemade dishes, prepared with enough outstanding skill to easily compete with 3-star Michelin Chefs. The menu included a delicious three cup tofu recipe, Mexican quesadillas with mouth-watering homemade guacamole, Welsh cakes, and a quintessentially British Victoria sponge.

The event, organised by Miro, Jojo, Jemima and Hattie, was a great opportunity to celebrate the very Johnian values of equality, diversity and inclusion – making everybody feel at home should become the new motto of John’s!
All the proceeds from this event as well as from the global week pub quiz in John’s bar were donated to the Save the Children appeal. We are grateful to all the students and staff who so generously contributed to the success of the event by bringing in some fantastic dishes, or simply those that attended and enjoyed some good company and tasty food -and music too, thanks to Annabelle!
We are looking forward to putting on more events like these in the future.
