JMS BBQ 2024: kicking off June with live music and cold drinks

Grant Kuppenheimer reviews the 2024 JMS BBQ, a festival of food and live music

Last week, the John’s Music Society BBQ, a one-of-a-kind event, was a resounding success. It not only showcased the musical talent of Durham but also fostered a unique sense of community and camaraderie. Whether you were sitting on hay bales or dancing to the music, the atmosphere was electric, filled with the shared joy of Johnians celebrating the end of exams. Bands like The Quays, Durham Dynamics, Basement Jazz, and Duram Duram, played past favourites that had the audience tapping their feet.

“After the stresses of exams, there quite simply is nothing better than a relaxing beer in the sun while the music plays”

With many Johnians finishing exams a few weeks prior, the JMS BBQ was a wonderful break from the trepidation of sitting exams. With the month of June busy with SJCR-organised events, the BBQ ran as the second event after the festival of sport on 2nd June. Indeed, in years past, the JMS event has always been popular with students who appreciate the plethora of food and drink while listening to live music on hay bales. The weather was lovely this year, and the library lawn served as the perfect venue. Deputy Editor Dan Bavister, an event attendee, commented how, “the JMS BBQ was a wonderful afternoon of fantastic music and delicious food and drink. After the stresses of exams, there quite simply is nothing better than a relaxing beer in the sun while the music plays.”

“The John’s Bar Team worked tirelessly to ensure that no one would leave the event empty-handed”

The success of the event not only brought joy to the student attendees but also underscored the vital role of the John’s Music Society in nurturing the thriving musical scene at St John’s College. The society is renowned for its annual musical production, this year’s being Singin’ In the Rain, a testament to the talent of John’s students. JMS also hosts termly concerts, open mic nights, and a student choir that frequently collaborates with the St John’s Chapel Choir during events. The John’s Bar Team worked tirelessly to ensure that no one would leave the event empty-handed, offering a variety of beverages to suit everyone’s taste. Their dedication and hard work were truly appreciated. The JMS BBQ celebrated the college’s diverse talent and interests, and the SJCR commented how the charity is “always supportive of initiatives that encourage students to perform and take part in music activities. The JMS BBQ was a great chance for students from other colleges to participate and was an exciting afternoon for all involved.” Please follow @johns.sjcr on Instagram or Facebook to stay current on the many upcoming events, especially the college summer ball.
