Meet the SCR Exec: Ed Spencer

The Senior Common Room (SCR) brings together staff, academics, alumni and friends as part of the wider St John’s community, playing an active role in College life through events, conversation and engagement across the year. Led by its Executive Committee, and chaired by the President, the SCR offers opportunities to connect, contribute and take part in the life of the College. Here, we meet Ed Spencer, SCR President and civil servant, who shares how he came to be involved and what the SCR brings to the College.

Tell us a little bit about your career.

My career path has been varied, spanning law, policing, and security services. I now work in a strategic policy role within the Civil Service. If any of these areas interest you, feel free to get in touch for an informal chat.

What drew you to get involved in the SCR at St John’s?

My involvement with the SCR has developed over time. My wife previously served as Assistant Principal, and I was a Pastoral Tutor/Mentor from 2015, before later taking on roles as SCR Treasurer and now President. What initially drew me in was the sense of community and shared purpose; what has sustained my involvement is the opportunity to contribute to College life in a way that is both relational and practical.

What do you most value about being part of the SCR community?

At its heart, the SCR is characterised by honesty, acceptance, and a genuine sense of belonging. It is a space where people can be themselves, engage openly, and form friendships that often extend well beyond College. That combination of warmth and authenticity is what I value most.

Are there particular events or aspects of College life you especially enjoy?

Formals are certainly a highlight—they provide a valuable opportunity to come together in a structured and celebratory way. However, just as important are the more informal moments: the ad hoc conversations in corridors, shared spaces, or over coffee. Those unplanned interactions often play a significant role in building and sustaining the community.

How does the SCR contribute to the wider life of the College?

The SCR brings together individuals with a wide breadth of professional and personal experience. That diversity contributes to the life of the College by fostering connection, encouraging the exchange of ideas, and strengthening a sense of shared identity. It also creates opportunities for networking and collaboration in a way that feels organic rather than formalised.

What would you say to someone considering SCR membership?

I would strongly encourage them to apply. The SCR is an open and welcoming community, and we are always keen to hear from those who are interested in becoming part of it. It offers a meaningful way to connect with others and engage more deeply with College life.
