Thanks to the St John’s College Student Opportunities Fund, Yibing Chen competed in the Northern Tier 1 league and the Women’s National Trophy with Durham’s Women’s Volleyball Team 3. She reflects on a season of tough competition, team resilience, and how their hard work led to a brilliant victory.

As a proud member of Durham University’s Women’s Volleyball Team 3, this season marked a significant leap not only in our league standings but also in the challenges we faced. With the invaluable support of the St John’s College Student Opportunities Fund, I had the privilege of competing in the Northern Tier 1 league and the Women’s National Trophy during the Michaelmas term. This year, we encountered opponents of unparalleled skill, providing us with the opportunity to test our mettle and refine our strategies at a much higher competitive level. Despite a daunting start, including losing the first set against York Women’s 1, we rallied to win crucial sets and ultimately the match. Our remarkable 3–2 victory showcased our team’s resilience and spirit.

Volleyball has always been more than just a sport to me; it’s a platform for personal growth, teamwork, and facing new challenges head-on. The scholarship covered essential costs, including my kit and tournament fees, allowing me to focus on volleyball and my studies without financial stress. I am deeply grateful for the support and trust from St John’s College, which has been pivotal in my development as an athlete and a scholar. This support has allowed me to represent our university at such a prestigious level, and the experiences gained have been invaluable in my personal and athletic development.
