Hi there! I’m Alice and in case you don’t know me, I’m from a small village in mid-Wales and have recently finished my Ancient History degree here in Durham. Outside of my degree, over these past three years I enjoyed getting involved in student theatre, volunteering in the local community and visiting every college bar! In Epiphany term I was elected as your next SJCR President and have just taken over the role from the fabulous Molly Byford.
The SJCR stands for St Johns Common Room and oversees many aspects of student life in the College – from sports to events to welfare. It is my job as President to head our wonderful team of volunteers who help make College life the best it can possibly be! It is also my job to be the voice of the students to College and the wider University so please let your opinions be heard – they are invaluable!
2020-21 was an unprecedented and certainly tough year for both staff and students at St John’s. However, we managed to pull through as a stronger community than ever and I am optimistic about what this future year holds. As a College we are really hoping this year that some sort of normality can resume. As President I hope to help push for some of our college traditions to return after their enforced hiatus. To those Johnians who have recently graduated, I hope to welcome you back very soon to enjoy some of those things you may have missed these past two years.
One of my main aims this year is to really push all aspects of College life to be more sustainable. Even though we are one of the smallest colleges in Durham, we certainly have a huge impact on the planet and environment. I believe this year things can change as we continue to think in a more eco-conscious way in everything we do.
If you are joining us at St Johns for the first time this September, then make sure you get involved with the common room – there is something for everyone! And if you are not a fresher but returning back to St John’s in the Autumn, then it is never too late to get involved.
I am so excited to begin this role as your president and really look forward to what the next year brings.
