A Day in St John’s: Postgrad Life in 2025

Simeng Wang describes her experience of John’s as a postgrad.

As a second-year PhD candidate in Law, I’ve come to know St John’s not just as a college, but as a real home. From the quiet corners for study to the familiar faces around College, life here has settled into a rhythm that feels both productive and comforting.

Most of my days begin with a walk along the Bailey, past the chapel and through the gates that still make me pause, even after all this time. One of the best things about being a postgraduate at St John’s College is the number of beautiful and peaceful spaces available for study. As someone who spends a lot of time reading and writing, I’ve come to know almost every nook of the library, the Crossroads, and other tucked-away spots across College.

Alongside my research, I’ve been actively involved in College life through different roles. Working as a Student Library Assistant has been especially rewarding. I know the layout of the shelves almost by heart, and it’s a joy to help keep the library running smoothly. Whether I’m shelving books or helping someone find a resource, it’s a space I truly enjoy being part of. I also work as a Website, Media & Communications Intern, where I help promote College website and tell the stories that make John’s so unique. These experiences have given me a deeper appreciation for how our College functions behind the scenes and how students can contribute to its everyday life.

One of the highlights of postgraduate life here is attending the research seminar. It’s a chance to step away from our individual projects and hear what others in the community are working on. The discussions are always insightful and supportive, and they’ve helped me see my own research from new perspectives. It’s also just a lovely opportunity to be reminded that we’re not working in isolation and there’s a vibrant academic community all around us.

Between research, work, and College life, there’s still time for reflection, such as a quiet moment by the river or a catch-up with friends over coffee. Our College has a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere that really supports the academic journey, especially in a demanding programme like a PhD.

This short video captures just one ordinary day, but in a place like St John’s, even the ordinary feels full of character. I hope it gives you a sense of what it’s like to live and work here as a postgrad. For me, it’s not just about study, it’s about being part of a place where that study is truly supported.
