A Night to Remember: The Media, Marketing and Communications Formal, 2023

Dan Bavister reflects on last week’s ‘Once a Johnian’ Formal, which saw John’s students, past and present, enjoying interaction with a range of journalists, broadcasters and marketing gurus.

Thursday the 19th of October was the 2023 Media, Marketing and Communications formal at St John’s, and by all accounts: it was a night to remember. It began with a panel discussion, chaired by third year English Literature student Daisy Mitchell, in which a wide range of contemporary issues were discussed alongside pertinent reflections from the panel members on their treasured days as students at St John’s.

The talk moved naturally into a drinks reception in Crossroads. While the Prosecco and sparkling soft drinks flowed, current undergraduates, postgraduates and Cranmer Hall ordinands were able to mingle with a wide range of journalists, broadcasters and marketing gurus, among others.

These included Tim Luckhurst, Principal of South College and former senior broadcaster and newspaper editor, who was able to share his rich knowledge and experience with the numerous enthusiastic students present, a good many of whom were interested in pursuing careers in journalism or media.

The dinner itself followed; a three-course affair served with complimentary drinks for all in attendance. Over dinner, alumni and friends of the college sat among the students, and gowns were eschewed in favour of lounge suits – this was to ensure a relaxed atmosphere to facilitate an easier and franker exchange of ideas, wisdom and advice.

This also created the perfect setting for current and former students of St John’s alike to reminisce on their experience of life in college. Memories and wisdom exchanged, a strong bond was forged and networks shaped and enhanced between generations of Johnians.

Indeed, these unique ‘Once a Johnian’ formals provide an invaluable opportunity for current students to network with the college’s most prestigious and accomplished alumni. Going forwards, this year should bring a whole range of these events – from arts and culture, to science and innovation – which are another great reason to love St John’s.

For alumni and friends of St John’s interested in attending one of these such events in future, please feel free to get in touch with the College via email on johns.alumni@durham.ac.uk.
