Florence at the Fringe: a Trip to Edinburgh, August 2023

August saw Florence Booth take a trip to Edinburgh to perform in a play about growing up in a northern working-class community at the fringe, made possible by a grant from St John’s College Student Opportunities Fund.

In August I travelled to Edinburgh to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I performed as the character Eva in a play called ‘Chance’ by Yolan Noskay.

The play follows Aaron who has been recently excluded from mainstream education and is being sent back to Sunnyside Pupil Referral Unit.

‘Chance’ is about what it’s like growing up in a northern working-class community and life as a young person today.

St John’s College student opportunities award allowed me to fund my travel to and accommodation in Edinburgh, which, in turn allowed me to benefit from this project by achieving critical exposure for my future career prospects.

The award also allowed me to promote the overall message of ‘Chance’; bringing awareness to those whose situations often are overlooked.

I feel this is a very important message to spread and combines the inclusive nature of St John’s College along with promoting underrepresented voices.

Additionally, I felt that the student opportunities award allowed me to immerse myself fully in the festival, not just performing but watching theatre and exploring a new city, which I would otherwise not have been able to do.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in Edinburgh and the opportunity to perform at such an iconic festival whilst creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Additionally, I want to say thank you to St John’s college for supporting me and allowing me to participate in such a rewarding experience.
